Nahanni Butte is situated at the junction of the South Nahanni and Liard Rivers.
Most of the residents in Nahanni Butte are Slavey Dene. The community was founded by the Marcellais, Vital, and Matou families who occupied the present site, as well as the Konisenta and Betsaka families from Netla River who were moved 24 km to the present site by government. Today trapping is still a main source of income along with tourism. Nahanni National Park, fantastic scenery, wildlife and outdoor activities make this a popular tourist spot.
The population is roughly 100.
